Artist “Etches” Elaborate Images of the Natural World Directly Into Wood

Mymodernmet_ What started as a simple DIY project has become a career for wood-burning artist Court O'Reilly, also known as Hippie North. Using pyrography tools, she uses wood as her canvas for incredibly realistic depictions of animals and plants. She's gotten so good that she's even produced a stunning self-portrait that completely captures her likeness.

O'Reilly's journey with pyrography began when she decided to engrave initials into a cherry wood canoe paddle that she purchased as a gift for someone. After finding the process relaxing, she began creating more and more pieces. Now, she is fully engaged in the process, which begins with selecting the perfect piece of wood. From there, she creates a design that is very often inspired by flora and fauna.

“My artwork includes flora and fauna to deepen the earthy storytelling the wood already has to offer,” she tells My Modern Met. “I hope that through observing my art, people will feel like they’re immersed on a peaceful hike in the forest.”

O'Reilly is not only passionate about creating her own pyrography. She enjoys sharing the secrets of her wood-burning art with others and does so through her YouTube channel and TikTok. She also has an online course for those looking to get started with pyrography, as well as a book. If you are looking to take home a piece of her art, she has original pieces available on her website and also takes commissions.
